Olympic Countdown Clock has Begun

Yesterday the Olympic countdown clock had begun, counting down the 500 days to go before the start of the London 2012 Olympics. In the run up to the Olympic this year Itube will be making some changes, improvements to the London interactive Tube map, clearer maps and plenty of information on the Olympics themselves, tickets sales, prices and mainly tube information related to the Olympics. I look forward the hard work needed to really inform the thousands of tourists and Londoners needing information during this special period.

The countdown has begun! :)

Finished…terminado…finito…ertig!

Itube is finally finished, it does everything that was intended and overall i am very pleased. This project has been a great personal achievement, and reflects my progress at my time at uni. Itube will be an on going project, as i believe it has great potential. Looking back at my production more time could have been dedicated to the design, however all the functionality is there and with user testing at the charminster language school, i believe its useable. Please take a look at my final major project. any comments would be appreciated. Itube is available for download to your desktop, mobile or online.

2 weeks to go…mobile me

Only 2 weeks left before the deadline and there is still so much to do. A lot of the nitty gritty parts are done, however the most challenging part of the work left to do is the journey planner and mobile version of the appliaction. The journey planner requires some help from my collaborator, i have been reading up on a star algorithms but i simply am struggling with applying it to the tube map. The mobile version is taking some time due to it mbeing coded in as2 rather tha as3 like the main application, since flash lite is in as2. There should be enough time as the mibile version will be alot simpler.

So far the project is looking more and more professional, and more functionality is being added by the day. Search functionality is coming along great, just very mundain adding every station to the xml file list. Also i have decided to show just the Olympic stations on the geographical map, as that is the most important part of the project and my target audience.

Some very looong nights to come! but it will be totally worth it.

itube…under construction

Itube

So the Major idea, oooooo, the idea is to create an interactive London underground tube map for the 800,000 tourists arriving in London for 2012 Olympics. The map will be specifically aimed at this target audience however people from all background and even those who live in London will be able to use the map. Currently there is not a fully interactive map out there, there are journey planner which my map will include, however currently on the TFL website a PDF download is available to anyone wanting current information in another language. This puts the 800,000 tourists at a disadvantage if they don’t know English. My map will be mainly constructed using symbols, as it’s the only global language. Other functions of the map will include using it to find top tourist destinations, venues of the Olympics and much more. All the information a tourist could want will be in one place, on one interactive map.

My research was fairly intense, I have contacted TFL and STILL waiting for their reply, but my research has really found this gap, where tourists sites are advising tourists to get the tube map from another source other than TFL as its not very efficient and take a while to download. This really is not acceptable from TFL; they should offer the best source of the information. I also found that tourists are told that the tube map is not as tourist-friendly as other countries, then to find a quote from TFL themselves announcing that the map has lost its simplicity, I feel I really have struck gold. However this is a big project to take on, and I’m still very much learning the code and processes needed to complete this project.
